A vibrant and energetic mixed-media title sequence for new CBBC show High Hoops about a high school girls basketball team
Challenge
Working closely with the production company producing the show, we planned a complex green screen shoot, capturing live action footage that we combined with hand-drawn animation to create a dynamic intro sequence to the show.
Shot design
Through the sequence we introduce all the main characters in the show, with actions that give the viewer a steer on the characters personality and the role they play in the series. The sequence had to be pacy and dynamic, creating a sense of excitement, whilst bringing through some of the humour and zaniness of the show.
Design style
We created a vibrant and textured design style for the sequences, using halftones in a comic book influenced look, combined with hand-drawn type and doodles like you might find on a school exercise book. We wanted to combine this paper texture style with frame by frame animated sequences to add depth and bring the school book look to life. Characters are shot on green and digitally ‘cut out’ with a white paper border to add to the effect.
Shot breakdown
Overseeing the shoot from a VFX perspective we worked with the series director to capture the footage we needed, with cast members shot on green screen for us to add animated elements and composite together. This required some spinning of imaginary basketballs, and pushing open doors that weren't there, but with careful planning the mixed media end result works well.
Key art
The final shot in the sequence became the key art for the show, as the High Hoops title is revealed. This key visual used in marketing to represent the show. It's job it to quickly visually communicate the vibe of the show, as this sets the tone for show when used in thumbnails on iPlayer, as well as any promotional work for the series.
